Three Major Festivals in Ashiya / 芦屋の三大祭り

Spring: Cherry Blossom Festival / 春：芦屋さくらまつり

The citizens of Ashiya are proud of the many cherry trees on the banks of the Ashiyagawa River. In spring, the trees burst into boom together, producing a magnificent scene reminiscent of an “ukiyoe,” a traditional Japanese style of painting. During the festival, you can enjoy a nice stroll underneath the cherry blossoms, visit numerous street stalls, and attend open-air concerts, amongst other amusements.

• Date: early April
• Location: along the street west of the Ashiya Citizens’ Center

芦屋市民は、芦屋川沿いの桜並木を誇りにしています。春になると、桜の木が一斉に満開になり、浮世絵を思い出させる壮大な景色です。さくら祭りの開催中、桜並木の下をゆっくり散策しながら、様々な店舗の縁日や、野外コンサートなどが楽しめます。

• 開催時期：4月初旬
• 会場：市民センター西側道路

Summer: The Summer Carnival / 夏：芦屋サマーカーニバル

One of the exciting parts of the Summer Carnival is a dragon boat race. The most exciting part comes toward the end as each beautifully decorated boat competes to be the first to cross the finish the line. Also, don’t forget to check out the almost hundred stands along the Minami-Ashiyahama and thousands of fireworks. These fireworks are known as Ashiya no hanabi (Ashiya Fireworks) and their large colorful blooms light up the night sky every summer.

• Date: end of July-early August
• Location: the Minami-ashiyahama district

サマーカーニバルの見どころのひとつは、言うまでもなくドラーゴンボートレースです。特に、レースの後半、見事な飾りをつけたドラーゴンボートがゴールに迫って疾走する光景はワクワクさせてくれます。南芦屋浜に設置された約100店の露店や数千発の花火ショーも見逃せません。「芦屋の花火」として市民に親しまれ、毎年夏の夜空に大輪を咲かせています。

• 開催時期：7月末～8月上旬
• 会場：南芦屋浜地区

Autumn: Ashiya Autumn Festival / 秋：あしや秋まつり

The last one of the three major citywide events is the Autumn Festival. It features a variety of fun events including parades of decorated floats called “danjiri,” children’s mikoshi, street fairs, local product exhibits and sales, a rice festival, flea market, and more!

• Date: early October

芦屋三大祭の最後があしや秋まつりです。だんじり巡行、こどもみこし、屋台や地方特産物の展示販売、餅つき、のみの市などイベントが盛りだくさん！

• 開催時期：10月上旬
