Japan’s compulsory education includes elementary school, which is for children aged 6 through 12, and junior high, which is for children aged between 12 and 15. Your elementary school and junior high school will be decided depending on the area in which you live.

Classes are performed in Japanese.

Classes are free of charge, but extra charges must be paid for school lunches and school trips.

The school year starts in April and ends in March of every year.

There are 3 varieties of school: national (independent administrative institution), public (prefectural/municipal), and private. Following the education program, children can enroll in 3-year high schools and 4-year universities (or 2-year junior colleges) if they pass the entrance exams.

If your child is having difficulties with the Japanese language and is enrolled in either elementary or junior high school, please consult with the school.

If a parent or guardian is having difficulty paying school fees for economic reasons, there are systems available that will pay a portion of these. Please confirm with the Management Section of the Board of Education (0797-38-2085) for more details.

日本の義務教育では、6歳から12歳までの6年間は小学校、12歳から15歳までの3年間は中学校に通います。小学校、中学校は、住んでいるところによって、学校が決められています。

授業は、日本語で行われます。

学校の種類は、国立（独立行政法人）、公立（県立、市立）、私立があります。受験すると、高等学校に3年間、大学に4年間（短期大学には2年間）通うことができます。
